What is PCI?
PCI DSS stands for Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security
Standard (DSS). It was founded by the major credit card companies
as a guideline to help businesses that process card payments prevent
credit card fraud, hacking and various other security issues. An
organization processing, storing, or disseminating credit card data
must be PCI DSS compliant or they risk losing the ability to process
credit card payments. The PCI Security Standards reflect the combined
interests of VISA International, MasterCard Worldwide, Discover
Financial Services, American Express, and JCB. These five credit
card companies have agreed upon a common set of multifaceted data
security standards that includes requirements for security
management, policies, procedures, network architecture, software
design and other critical e-commerce protective measures.
